Direct Cremations

A Direct Cremation, sometimes called an unattended cremation, is a cremation which takes place without mourners present. At Harold White, we offer a Direct Cremation package that allows you to simplify the funeral arranging process without compromising on the level of care that your loved one receives.

Our experienced team will work with you to arrange a funeral that meets your needs. Much like our attended cremations, we will always try to accommodate your choice of local crematorium and date. There will not be a service for mourners at the crematorium however you can spend time with your loved one in our chapel of rest before the cremation takes place.

Direct Cremation FAQS

  • Some people choose Direct Cremations because they are more affordable than other funeral options.

Others choose a Direct Cremation because it gives them the space and freedom to organise a separate memorial on their own terms. A private service at a later date can often give families the time they need to gather their thoughts and prepare a meaningful tribute. Not everyone is comfortable in the formal surroundings of a crematorium or religious building so this also gives families the freedom to gather elsewhere.

If friends or families live oversees, a delayed service can create some time to make the necessary travel arrangements.

  • Death is complicated and everybody deals with it differently. For many people, a traditional funeral ceremony is an essential part of the grieving process. It is an opportunity for shared mourning which somehow helps them to move forward.

If you’re thinking about specifying a Direct Cremation in your will, or buying a Direct Cremation funeral plan, please consider making your family aware so that they can discuss it with you and understand your wishes.

  • Yes. All of our Direct Cremations are carried out at a crematorium that is local to one of our funeral homes. Depending on availability, you may be able to choose a crematorium to suit you and your family.

  • The Direct Cremation package does not include a service at the crematorium however you can organise a private memorial service. Many families choose to hold their own gathering separately and away from the crematorium or cemetery. The location and format is totally up to you. You might choose to have a gathering at a family member’s house, or over a meal at a favourite pub. It could be an informal outdoors ceremony as you scatter the ashes. This is something you can arrange yourself or the team at Harold White are available to help.

  • A direct cremation will usually take place in the morning; this is a quiet time for crematoriums so they offer a reduced fee. And because the cremation happens behind closed doors, there is no need for a premium coffin – we include a basic coffin as part of our package. You’re also unlikely to need orders of service or flowers however you may still choose to have these items if you do a separate memorial service.
